Out + About: Fashion in Detroit

Fashion in Detroit
On Saturday I attended the highly anticipated fashion show Fashion in Detroit. The event boasted fashion from some of Detroit's elite designers. Ten shows under one roof, featuring looks from the students of the International Academy of Design and Technology Detroit, Natalia Villafana, Brightly Twisted, Homeslice, Martini Retro, Morada Blue, Bachrach, Peter Soronen, Neiman Marcus and and Motorcity Blues by Joe Faris featuring Denise Ilitch Design.

The show started with designs from young students ages 11-17 of  IADT. Students created one of a kind pieces from recycled and repurposed items, one dress was even made from potato chip bags definitely  creative and inspiring. Natalia Villafana’s collection was filled with feminine and flowy silhouettes as well as very wearable pieces in earth tones highlighting a few pieces with stand out color. We loved the gorgeous floor length red gown.

Brightly Twisted featured a very colorful and pretty collection of tie dyed pieces and accessories, this collection definitely had us craving summer. Homeslice was up next and surely did not disappoint, we still can’t believe the line is fully organic. We loved the puff sleeved kaftan dress. The collection from Martini Retro was fun and definitely reminiscent of the 70s with its mix of polyester and Shaft theme music, very fun.

Next, Morada Blue this bright sexy collection of swimwear definitely had everyone ready for summer. Bachrach presented a very polished menswear collection, the styling was exquisite and the tailoring was spot on. Farmington Hills native, Peter Soronen would show next the polish and sophistication of his dresses wowed the crowd everything was beautifully made. Sarah Jessica Parker, Reese Witherspoon and the first lady Michele Obama have all worn Peter's designs.

Neiman Marcus showed a very playful and colorful collection. Many of the looks featured color blocked ensembles fit for spring and summer. When it came time for the finale Joe Faris would debut his collection Motor City Blues featuring accessories from Denise Ilitch Designs. The collection was filled with denim and Detroit inspired t-shirts, opening with the imported from Detroit tee.

All in all the show was great and a huge success! I had a great time networking and covering the event in the Stylecaster Media Lounge, it was a fun filled day. It was great meeting quite a few FASH DET members for the first time as well as seeing some new and familiar faces in the Detroit fashion blogging scene. It was truly a blast!

We were not able to get pictures of the entire show so we know next year we'll definitely have a designated photographer.
